Ten Commandments Part 18
Summary
God has given us the Ten Commandments for several reasons. As we have taken a close look at the Ten Commandments, it is easy to see how their adherence promotes human flourishing. It is also easy to see that when they are broken society suffers. They speak to the grace of God which he graciously gives us. He wants us to be in relationship with him. In the commandments he has given us a roadmap for flourishing. He asks each of us the question of what kind of society do we desire to live in. Do we want to live in a society characterized by lying, stealing, adultery, murder, etc.? Or do we want to live in a society in which everyone can flourish.
He has also given us the Ten Commandments as a warning. It is a warning to avoid sliding down the slippery slope into sin. Sin begins with evil thoughts. It moves to complacency and acceptance of these thoughts. It ends with the resolution of our wills to do the sinful act. By adhering to the commandments, placing our trust in God, we can avoid this temptation.
In the end, we are left with a decision, expressed well in the title of a book by Francis Schaeffer
“How should we then live?”
